Ch. 125 : My Happily Never After

Despite being married, life for these two doesn’t change much.

Well, besides Keri finally getting what she wants.

Cooking facial expressions <3! (And suddenly I miss Serenity... again.)

Dante goes to prom stag and wins Prom King.

And Dastan hasn’t been doing much at work really... everytime someone calls for a coffee runner he’s first in line. Just for an excuse to get out into town without a family member on his hip. Ever since Keri told him everything he can’t help but notice how everyone always seems to be watching him. At first he thought it was just because he was the famous firefighter’s son... but now he’s not so sure. Is it possible someone is paying the paparazzi to keep an eye on him?

Just like always, he makes time each night to help Dante with homework. Tonight however he has a second agenda.
“So uh... have you heard from ‘Murray” anymore? Is she still in your class?”

“No I haven’t seen her since your birthday.” He stops to think for a minute. “Actually, I don’t think anyone has. Professor Silverman was asking about her too. She didn’t even show up for prom. It’s was kind of weird now that you mention it.”

So then she was Marie. Perfect. “Well, if you happen to run into her tell me okay? I’d like to talk to her about this upcoming movie roll that needs a red head. Pretty sure she’s the only one in town.”
Dante promises to keep an eye open.

“Dastan is asking about her.” Keri whispers to her mother in law one evening. “I think he might be considering contacting her. Or at least looking for a way to.”
“I know.” Joy admits. “Just keep an eye on him. I’ll go talk to Damian tomorrow. See if he’s heard from her at all.”

Human or no. Keri can STILL kick your ass. If that bitch goes near her husband she’ll send a stake straight through her heart.

... Or slightly above it. Yeah, the neck will work just fine she figures.

Jason and Damian had a little boy. Dustin Starr-Todley.

Damian isn’t home but Jason seems very interested in Joy’s questions about a young redheaded vampire. He hasn’t heard his husband talking to anyone outside of immediate family or work, but he’ll keep his ears open.
Also: Can she put his son down now? He wants to hold him too! Joy purposely ignores his pleas. Dustin is her only grandchild so far. And she plans on enjoying him.

Eventually though she decides worrying isn’t going to do her any favours and focuses on her garden.

Joven becomes obsessed with meditating.

And Keri and Dastan still play family. She’s told him everything she knows, but its not enough. He wants to know Marie’s side of the story too.

And thats why one morning he calls in sick to work and leaves at the same time the carpool normally arrives. With any luck Keri won’t even notice he’s gone.

In the last week he’s searched high and low for any sign of her, even considering checking the caves behind the waterfall by her house. But as he passes by the old chapel he realizes he already knows where she’ll be hiding.

Sure enough, he finds her below ground, in the old bridal chambers underneath the chapel. She doesn’t seem shocked to see him.

“So you finally found me. I was wondering when you’d come.”
“When the siren beckons, the sailor can’t help but come. Although he knows his death is near.” Dastan mutters, quoting an old poem from Dante’s homework. “I couldn’t help myself.”

“I’m no siren.” She answers with a smile. “But it is good to see you again old friend.”
He pulls her into a hug as she nears. She’s cold, far colder then even a vampire should be. Can vampires get sick he wonders? “It’s good to see you as well. How have you been dealing?”

“Better.” She manages after a moment of thinking. “I’m afraid the guilt of what I almost did to you has been quite literally eating me alive. Everything I’ve tried to do to save this city through you has been for nothing. I feel myself getting weaker with each day. My mother was able to stop each prediction with her first plan... I can’t understand why I am such a failure.”

"Why not just... give up?" He offers. "Keri says you become a normal human if you stop testing fate. Would that really be so bad?"

"Keri was incorrect. We do not become ordinary humans, we die ordinary humans. With each failed vision we grow weaker and sicker until our bodies can't take it anymore. Some can just handle it more then others."

Dastan considers what she said for a moment before speaking. “Then... maybe you need to ask for help.”
She looks at him curiously. “Pardon?”
“If you’d just asked me to leave Keri and go with you I would have gone.” He admits,
She looks as shocked as he feels. “I... I couldn’t do that! I mean... I suppose I could have... but then what? You say that now, but your answer as a teen might have been different. Daddy was right, y’know. You never would have been happy with me. If you’d gone of your own free will you would have regretted it everyday for the rest of your natural life.”

“Well I’m sure of it now. I don’t know what you saw of me in your vision, but if you need me to leave this town then lets do it. I love Keri, but I love you as well. She will heal, and so will I.” He smiles at her sadly. “I see you wasting away and I can’t stand it Marie. I'd do anything to keep you safe. What do you say?”

“Its too late for that.” She whispers. “I wanted to pull you away so your green eyed son would never be born. Keri’s already pregnant with him. Until he is older, there is nothing I can do but wait. The longer I take, the higher the stakes will be. At this point, no matter what I do your family will end. But if I cannot stop my vision from coming true with even that penalty, this entire city will burn.”
She sees his face fall with her news and instantly feels sick to her stomach. “I’m so sorry, Dastan. Please, forgive me.”

Upon getting home, he finds Keri in the kitchen cleaning up leftover apple slices. Something in his mind clicks in the memory of an old wives tale he knows. Apples for boys, watermelons for girls.”
When she sees him her face almost breaks from her smile. “Dastan! I’m so glad you’re home. I have some great news! We’re going to have a baby!”

He’s thankful for the acting lessons his agent forced him to take. “Thats great, Keri! I’m so excited!”

As he pulls her in for a hug he can’t help but think back to the young vampire he left behind in the chapel, and the final conversation they had after she told him of Keri’s pregnancy.

“Do you think we ever stood a chance?” He wondered aloud to her. "Forget fate, forget your vision. Would we ever have ended up together?"
“I sometimes wonder it myself.” She answered. “Either way, we’ll never find out now, will we”

“No...” She decides at last, unable to hide her smile. “I don’t think it ever would have worked out between us. Witches aren’t allowed to live happily ever after. But maybe one day, you can."”

---

I'm sure there has to be at least one Marie/Dastan shipper still out there. This chapter was dedicated to you. Really though, its up to you decided if Marie is being honest or deceiving in this chapter. She isn't going away anytime soon.

Ch. 124 : Witch

Keri never considered the effect dating a celebrity would have on her lifestyle. To her, Dastan was just that cute kid who sat next to her in Math. But now that they’re both adults it seems like suddenly everyone wants his autograph, and by default, hers as well. Unsure what to do she just smiles at the paparazzi and continues her daily piano practice. Maybe they’ll leave her alone if she acts boring...

Joven takes up karate. He’s already perfected his athletic and handiness skills, so karate seemed like the most obvious hobby to take up.

Dastan has been putting in long hours at the film lot in order to one day get a real role in a film. So on his first day off he grabs Keri by the hand and takes her down for a picnic in the half-hidden beach under the house.

They go through the typical small talk at first before Dastan finally decides to ask the question that has been on the tip of his tongue since he aged up. “Marie... did something stupid, didn’t she.”
Keri doesn’t answer and so he continues. “I’m not as dumb as everyone’s been treating me. I may not remember what happened in the chapel the night before my birthday, but I know she wasn’t trying to hurt me. I know her. She would never do anything to hurt me.”
“But do you really know her?” Keri asks at last, breaking her silence.

“Of course I do!” He feels as if she just insulted him. “She was my best friend! She was good, she was innocent, she was a victim, not a culprit. She only ever wanted a place to belong. She’s not this evil... thing that everyone seems to think whenever I ask about her.”
“Dastan, she’s a witch.”
“... so?”

“You... honestly don’t know about witches?” She asks, completely caught of guard. “I would have thought... I mean... well I guess it makes sense. She wouldn’t have wanted you to be afraid of her.”
“Keri, will you just tell me what’s going on?”
“Witches... well no one really knows much about them. Just that they’ve got the powers of gods, and that they feel this unnatural need to piss the fates off. Many of them receive these visions of the future the way the fates wish it to occur. They can either let it happen as is and slowly become regular humans, or they can piss the fates off and f*** up society for the rest of us while they gain more power.”

“What sort of powers are we talking here?”
“Saving sims from death, killing them on a whim, resurrection, teleportation, time manipulation, watching... and those are just what I myself know about. Until now, all witches have been limited to one lifespan. Wether they gain power or lose it. I think thats why the elders wish Marie dead. They knew there was a chance she would inherit her mother’s powers. And since she’s a vampire theres a good chance she’ll stick around for ages causing havok. Her father left that part out when he asked grandmother Ella for help.”
“So what did she do to me exactly? What was she trying to accomplish? I can’t remember anything at all.”
Keri’s face softens. She knows she shouldn't be telling Dastan any of this, but she can’t help herself. “Mr. Merrick says she saw a vision of your future, of a descendent of yours. She wants that to never happen. But because one of our ancestors was a witch she can’t physically harm either one of us. So I think she was just trying to lure you away with her vampiric mind control abilities. “

“Wait there was a witch in our family? Who?”
“Our great-something-grandmother, Serenity. I don’t think she was ever trained though. I mean its common knowledge that she was young far past when she was supposed to be, and she had a nasty habit of making men disappear. Not to mention the whole situation around the fact that she was killed through a meteor strike in the middle of a clear day.”
“Oh right. She was the one that got squished.”

There’s one final question thats been bothering him, so he asks it. “Did you become human because of all this?”
She nods slowly. “Yes... there is one way to ensure vampires never enter your home. Merrick taught it to your mother and for as long as she lives, and you remain living with her Marie can never attack you at home. She knew you’d want to leave one day, so she asked me to move in and keep you safe. I couldn’t do that as a vampire... so I changed.”

“You didn’t have to do that for me.” He tells her after a soft kiss.
“I know. But you can’t help making stupid decisions for the ones you love.”
He knows exactly what she means..

It had been pretty much an unspoken agreement between then that they would one day marry. He figures its about time it became a real agreement.

They marry there and then on the beach, with the crashing waves around them as their only witness.

You do stupid things for the ones you love.

Sometime you just have to give everything up.

Marie couldn’t agree with you more.

“You’re sure Joy believes that little charm will protect him?”
“Fully.” Her father answers. “Keri has even become human in order to live with them. What are your orders?”
Part of her feels guilty for controlling her father in this way, for hurting him so much. But she’s seen the future of Dastna's family in her mind’s eye. She’ll do anything to stop it from happening. Sacrifices have to be made sometimes. Her father will understand that one day... she’s sure of it. "Keep the news of our presence from reaching the elders. I will go into hiding in case you are being watched. Do not contact me unless it of the utmost importance."

I've been working on the lore for this for a while.

Ch. 123 : Love's Enough

Joy can’t help but be concerned when she finds Dastan still in bed long after school should have started. He leaves once she starts the lecture, but she can’t help feel as if there’s something familiar to the lost look in his eyes. The confusion when he looks around.

Her phone draws her from her thoughts and she answers, happy for the distraction. “Hello?”
“Joy? Joy Starr?”
She doesn’t recognize the voice, but she feels no need to worry. Usually the weirdos spend the night on her front lawn, not calling her private phone line. “Speaking. How may I help you?”

“My name is Merrick. Gregory Merrick. I have reason to believe your son may be in trouble. I can’t do anything myself from where I am, but if you do as I say exactly, you might be able to watch over him for at least a while longer.”
Joy doesn’t even hesitate. “I’ll do whatever needs to be done.”
“Good. Just repeat after me: ‘I, Joy, forbid any and all vampires from ever entering my property for as long as I live.”
She does so, and feels nothing. “Are you sure-”
“Yes.” He answers quickly, relief in his voice. “Thats all you need to do. Oh and... can you go to the chapel down your street and unlock the door to the basement? I am feeling very claustrophobic right now. Also my legs seem to be broken in a number of places. A ride to the hospital would be very much appreciated.
Joy... really isn’t sure what to think.

Joven wonders if his son is on drugs. He’s been staring at the light ever since getting home from school. Dante tells them Dastan had been doing much the same during the school day, and that people were getting worried.

“It’s time for cake!” Joy announces, trying to diffuse the tension in the house.
Dastan seems to snap back to reality, at least partially. “Wait we can’t! Marie isn’t here yet. She promised she would be.”
“No...” Joy manages through a fake smile her son doesn’t notice. “Her father called. She’s sick at home so she can’t make it. But she sends her best wishes.”
Dastan isn’t quite convinced, but he sees no reason to delay his birthday any longer. It’ll come soon anyway, cake or no.

Joy and Joven can’t believe their baby is already so grown up.

Sparkles!

*Giggles* Yeah I think he’ll be a good film star, don’t you? I’m already a fan. <3

The next day, Dante doesn’t have school and spends most of his morning playing video games. When Dastan takes a seat next to him, he can’t help but notice the vague look on his brother’s face has faded ever so slightly. “I take it you’re feeling better?”
“Loads.” Dastan answers. “Shouldn’t you be at school?”
“Your graduation is today. So I was given the day off. Ah the perks of being the valedictorian’s brother.”

“Oh right... graduation. I guess I’d better go get dressed.”
“Oh!” Dante calls out suddenly. “I almost forgot. Your agent called earlier. Apparently someone at the film centre wants to talk to you about a job or something.”
“They’re offering me a job?”
Dante shrugs. “Go figure, eh? I know dad’s pretty popular because he’s saved the city so many times. But I don’t get why you’re suddenly so famous. I mean, everyone knows I’m the cute one in the family.”
Dastan ignores his younger brother’s remark and decides to drop by the film centre after graduation. It might be... fun.

The graduation ceremony is nice, and its short. Dante can’t wait to get home and practice his guitar. He’s considered joining music club, but most of the members are dorks. And he wants to be cool and famous. Not a nerd.

Joy and Joven put on a little show for the paparazzi. Making sure everyone knows that in this rampant world of breakups and divorce... a teenage marriage can last through thick and thin. Sometimes Joy wonders what her life would have been without Joven. Her husband on the other hand never imagines life without her. He can’t.

Oh and Dastan totally gets the job. Was there ever any doubt? He starts as a background extra the very next day.

He doesn’t recognize the familiar black haired girl at first. Not until he sees her smile. “Keri...?”
“Yep!” She laughs, doing a twirl for him. “Not bad for a human, eh? Dad still isn’t in the habit of cooking for two, so your mom invited me over for dinner. Do you mind?”

Keri decides being a human isn’t so bad. Not when a real life chef is the one doing the cooking. Grilled cheese is delicious!

(She does however need some practice in pacing herself. Choking is a lot more painful when its food, not plasma juice going down the wrong pipe.)

“So you’ve REALLY never had normal food before? But... I thought as a child you might have...”
“Nah.” Keri says with a shrug. “Dad was really into hot dogs and junk food. And mom’s a vegetarian vampire. Tracey and I have lived off of fresh grown plasma fruit or juice since we were real young. You get used to it. But this is sooo much better.”
Joven can’t help but laugh at his wife’s shocked expression.

Dante knows Keri is virtuoso. So after dinner he pulls her aside and begs her to jam with him. She obliges.

“You play beautifully.” Dastan comments once his little brother has gone to bed. “Are you okay going home so late? Or would you like to stay the night?”

“Actually I was sort of hoping I could stay for longer then just the night...”
“You... want to move in?” He doesn’t sound against it, just curious. “When did you decide on that?”
“About the same time your mother asked me to.” She admits finally. “But if you don’t want me to, I’m okay with going back home. I don’t want to make you uncomfortable or anything. I know you’re sort of a prude when it comes to being intimate. You won’t want to share a room.”

Dastan decides to show her just how much a “prude” he is.

“Shall we take this upstairs?” She teases.
He smiles at her sweetly. “Nope! Not until marriage, love.”
“I hate you so much right now.”
“Right. Thats totally what your eyes are saying, Keri.”

They do end up sharing a bed together. But definitely not in the way Keri had hoped.

And Gen nine has OFFICIALLY BEGUN! (Holy craaaap guys!)

Reminder rolls:

- Couple
- 2 kids
- Primary Career : Film (Acting)
- Secondary Career : Busker/Band
- Gen Goal : 5 Star Celebrity
- Misc. Fun: Tattoo Addict.

Dastan is already at 3 stars. Keri will probably jump to that too after a few days in the household. I'm going to try and get them both to 5 stars to make it a bit more of a challenge. I don't actually know who will get all the tattoos... but I'm leaning towards Keri. It goes with the "badass" image I'm trying to give her.

Marie isn't out of the story just yet. She'll be around. : )
